Organizer for your Photos – Can you find the pictures?

It’s 10 minutes before your child has to leave for school. She rushes into the kitchen and says, “Mom, I need a picture of me and grandma and grandpa for my family tree at school.” You ask, “When do you need it, honey?” She says, “Today.” You know which picture she means, the one of the three of them taken Mother’s Day weekend. Can you find it easily, in time for her to take it to school? Do you even know where it is? Depending on the age of your child and how many Mother’s Days ago it was taken – it’s in one of those envelopes in one of those boxes in the closet or somewhere on the computer, but where?

I use two great organizing systems that allow me to find photos in a breeze. The first organizes my printed photos. I had 30 years of photos when I started sorting and was able to get through all those thousands (yes, thousands!) of photos. It has interchangeable compartments and dividers with tabs that I can write on with a #2 pencil. When those pictures get into a photo album, I can erase what’s on the tab and reuse it. I love that!

For my digital photos I use a program that allows me to rate my photos so I can pick out the best and delete the rest. Then I put them in multiple folders. For example, that photo mentioned above would be in daughter’s folder, in grandma & grandpa’s folder and in the folder for Mother’s Day. It’s in 3 folders but only on my computer once so it’s not taking up any additional memory; it’s merely tagged in each folder. In those few minutes before she leaves for school, I cross-reference all 3 folders and there it is. It took me about 15 seconds. I print it and send her off to school. In addition, the program has great, easy to use editing features and automatically backs-up my photos to an external hard drive. My pictures are protected and I don’t even have to think about it!

What would it mean to you to have your photos organized? What gets in your way?

Digital photography changed the way we all take photos. Not just the amount of photos but the physical act too…who ever uses a view finder these days. But digital photography has also changed the way we store those photos too.
When I shot on film I had a physical object. I took the time to make up albums either in chronological order or by subject.
Now I’m afraid to say I just use my hard drive as a bit of a dumping ground and because of that I don’t look at the stuff I have on there nearly as much.
I must get more organised too, I’m thinking.

That is what we find, Sheila. It sad really because what will happen to those photos. Where will they be in 15 or 20 years? And will we even remember what they are about. Even with digital photos, I still encourage you to print them and make albums. There’s nothing like holding a physical album and sharing it with someone, especially your children!

You are so right about the album thing, my kids love to look at the albums of when they were babies…..but none of us even think about crowding round the computer screen to share.
If we look at the photos we have on there we look individually. Shame really.

I could definitely use help in this area! I just recently did go in and at least tried to organize the photos by category (i.e. Christmas photos, my daughter’s school photos, etc.), but it would still take some time to find something more specific….I do have some photo albums (baby pictures, wedding pictures), but some of these things could definitely be consolidated! As for digital photos, I am clueless…I don’t even have a digital camera! Guess I should invest in one! The only digital photos I have on my computer are ones my daughter took and sent me; they need to be organized too! What gets in my way? Making the time to do it! Would need to move it up on my priority list!

That seems to be everyone’s issue – priority! I understand. The thing with time is that you don’t have to do it all in one sitting. You can do a little at a time. When I was sorting through those 30 years of photos, I started by doing a lot but I kept going by doing a little at a time, often while I was watching TV or listening to music. It helped me keep going!
